Like several school across America, our school celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday with Read Across America Day. It is important to note, that my daughter's school isn't like most schools when it comes to reading. I would put the library program up against any school's library program, public or private, in the country.
With that being said, Read Across America is a very important day for the school. Everyone dresses up in a character from a book (I think that Pippi was perhaps the best, though Nate the Great was really impressive as well). My kids went as Alice and Thing 2 (I went as Thing 1).

The school had been working up to the celebration for weeks. Every student in the school wrote out what they had for a favorite book and then the papers got hung up around school. The gym was really decorated for the assembly with characters and stuff all over the place. At the assembly, kids read stories and poetry that they had written. The music teacher has been working with the kids on songs about reading and Dr. Seuss. After it was over, most of the classes had special people come in and read to the classes. I got to read to a kindergarten class (the best age to read to, if I do say so myself).
As a family, we did a little more. Here was our dinner-
Hmm, I have already started to plan out next years Read Across America Celebration.
